What is Trabeculectomy? - Glaucoma Glossary
Trabeculectomy is a gold-standard incisional glaucoma surgery that creates a new pathway for fluid to drain from the eye, lowering intraocular pressure.
What it means for the patient
This is a surgical procedure usually recommended when eye drops and lasers fail to control eye pressure. The surgeon creates a tiny "trapdoor" in the white part of your eye to let fluid drain out safely.
Clinical significance
Trabeculectomy remains the most effective procedure for achieving very low target IOPs. However, it requires meticulous postoperative management to modulate wound healing and prevent bleb scarring or hypotony.
How it is tracked
Post-surgical IOP trajectories and adverse events are monitored specifically under surgical interventions in the Glaucoma One clinical roadmap.
